Up to 150 wallabies living wild near Paris in Rambouillet forest

Up to 150 wallabies are living wild in the forest of Rambouillet, near Paris, the descendants of a handful who escaped from a nearby zoo in the 1970s, it has emerged.

Some local residents have known of the marsupials’ presence for years, but many people dismissed the reports as a rumour until naturalists started studying and photographing them this year.

“People knew but didn’t say anything,” according to Stéphane Walczak of the Ile-de-France Hunters‘ Federation.

Some locals mistook them for kangaroos since wallabies look similar to kangaroos but are smaller.
